What ambergris is
A waxy substance produced in sperm whales and matured by the sea, ambergris smells sweet, marine and skin-like, with a soft, earthy warmth. In perfumery it is used in the base, today mostly as synthetic or reconstructed accords, to give a warm, salty, mineral and slightly sweet effect. It blends with woods, musks and marine notes, and adds a smooth, diffusive quality.
